SUBJECT MATTER OF the CASE The applicant is a Turkish national who was born in 1972 and lives in Diyarbakır.
She was the president of Malatya Branch of the Peace and Democracy Party (Barış ve Demokrasi Partisi – BDP) at the time of the events giving rise to the application.
The application concerns the criminal conviction of the applicant for disseminating propaganda in favour of the PKK, an illegal armed organisation, under section 7 § 2 of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, on account of a speech she made during the Newroz festival in 2007.
The applicant was sentenced to ten months of imprisonment.
